SB 253 Update: CARB Delays Reporting Deadline to November 10, 2026

On June 24th, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) officially proposed a 3-month delay of the SB 253 timeline, shifting the deadline from August 10th to November 10th. The proposed three-month extension is intended to ensure that covered entities have clarity on the final, approved regulation before their first SB 253 report is due.

As a reminder, SB 253 (also known as the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act) requires any entities doing business in CA with total revenues exceeding $1B to publicly disclose scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions. For this first year, CARB only requires scope 1 and scope 2 disclosure, followed by scope 3 (value chain) emissions reporting starting in 2027. As a next step, CARB will officially resubmit the proposal to the Office of Administrative Law, including additional changes to the regulation, and set up a 15-day public comment period (details to come).
