ISRAEL: Freed Hostages Released by Hamas Now Back in Israel
Per BBC News: “Twenty-four hostages have been released by Hamas and are now back in Israel. Among them are 13 Israelis, 10 Thais and one Filipino, says Qatar, which has been mediating between Israel and Hamas. The Israelis include four children - aged two, four, six and nine - as well as an 85-year-old woman.Palestinian detainees held by Israel have now been released to the West Bank as part of the deal.”
ARGENTINA: Right-Wing Libertarian Milei Wins Argentine Presidency
Per France 24: “Argentina elected right-wing libertarian Javier Milei as its new president on Sunday, rolling the dice on an outsider with radical views to fix an economy battered by triple-digit inflation, a looming recession and rising poverty.Milei, who rode a wave of voter anger with the political mainstream, won by a wider-than-expected margin. He landed some 56% of the vote versus just over 44% for his rival, Peronist Economy Minister Sergio Massa, who conceded.” Milei must still assemble a governing Legislature majority.
HOLLAND: Far-Right Geert Wilders Wins Dutch Elections
Per Reuters: “Far-right populist Geert Wilders wants to be the Netherlands' next prime minister and would focus his efforts on curbing immigration, he said following a landmark election win that will have repercussions in the Netherlands and beyond. Wilders' win sent a warning shot to mainstream parties across Europe ahead of European Parliament elections next June, which will likely be fought on the same issues as the Dutch election: immigration, cost of living and climate change. “ Wilders still lacks a coalition partner.
UKRAINE: Ukraine Establishes Bridgeheads on Left Bank of Dnipro; Launches New Drone Attack on Crimea
Per Kyiv Post: “Ukrainian Marines achieved a key goal of the war, crossing the Dnipro River and establishing a bridgehead. According to the best open-source reports, the Ukrainian Marines have pushed two groups of infantry, each numbering between 100-300 men, into a pair of enclaves on the left bank (the east bank) of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region. At the same time, Ukraine launched one of the largest drone attacks (since the start of the war) focused on Crimea.”
TAIWAN: Taiwan's opposition drama ends with no deal
Per Yahoo/BBC: “The extraordinary drama is over. There will be no united opposition ticket in Taiwan's presidential election in January. The final act was the most bizarre. On Thursday evening, all three of Taiwan's opposition presidential hopefuls - Ko Wen-je, Hou Yu-ih and billionaire businessman Terry Gou - found themselves sitting on a stage together in the ballroom of the Grand Hyatt hotel in Taipei. It was their last chance for an agreement - a shotgun wedding that would have shaken up the winner-takes-all race.”
LIBERIA: Liberia’s President George Weah Concedes Victory after Tight Run-Off Election
Per BBC: “Liberia’s President, George Weah, has conceded defeat to opposition candidate Joseph Boakai after a tight run-off election.Weah, a former soccer star, called Boakai after the country’s National Elections Commission (NEC) released provisional results on Friday. Boakai, a 78-year-old former vice president of Liberia, won 51% of the votes, after the final results were tallied by the elections commission on Monday.”
IRELAND: Dublin Erupts in Violent Riots
Per BBC: “The most riot police in Irish history were deployed to deal with Thursday's street violence in Dublin, the country's justice minister has said. Helen McEntee praised the police response to a riot which began following a knife attack in the city. Three children and a school care assistant were stabbed outside a primary school several hours earlier. Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar said about 500 people were involved in the riot.”
