Sex Slavery in the Islamic State

“Every day, I had to swallow one in front of him. He gave me one box per month. When I ran out, he replaced it. When I was sold from one man to another, the box of pills came with me,” a girl who didn’t know she was being given birth control. Sexual slavery has increased amongst Islamic State leaders. They continue sexual slavery with their foundational beliefs of these same actions occurring during the Prophet Muhammad’s time. In relation to Islamic law, a man “must ensure that the woman he enslaves is free of child before having intercourse with her.” Thus, to continue this sex slavery, the men have been forcing their victims to intake birth control to ensure that they are free of child and can be passed among the men.

After the jihadists captured the Yazidi community in Mount Sinjar on August 3, 2014, many women and girls were captured and enslaved. The Islamic State has made it legal for men to rape women they subjugate in almost any circumstances. Unless of course, as stated above, the woman herself is carrying a child or already a mother. According to those who have escaped from ISIS, about 3,400 Yazidi women and children are still held hostage by the Islamic State leaders.

In many cases the victims are given an injectable contraception, as well as oral. The victims would speak of their experiences, knowing when they were about to be sold and when they were driven to the hospital to be tested for pregnancy. If they were pregnant, then that means they were carrying their abuser’s child. If they weren’t then they knew they would be sold again to continue being raped. Of the 700 victims from the Yazidi ethnic group that were brought to a treatment center in northern Iraq, only 5 percent became pregnant during their enslavement, stated Dr. Nagham Nawzat.

In other cases, women that are fleeing in refuge are being injected by a hazardous contraceptive by people smugglers in order to ensure they do not become pregnant on their journey. For many cases, migrant girls will be sexually assaulted at some point during their journey to Europe or any other given area. In northern Africa sexual violence is common, especially by the people the travellers depend on the most. Even when the migrants reach Europe, they are not safe from sexual violence within the camps they are staying. In these cases, the ways in which women are being treated is inhumane, whereby sex slavery needs to be identified and terminated.
