Very powerful and moving speeches by Pres. Obama and Pres. Clinton at Chairman Cummings’ funeral today. Pres. Obama said that we “have an obligation (as citizens) to root ourselves in good soil” and noted that “being a strong man includes being kind”. That is a simple and powerful lesson. This sense of strength and compassion is something that we, as men, have to inculcate in young boys to eliminate the toxic elements of unevolved masculinity. Call it Tender Power. Strength with compassion and leadership with empathy. It’s particularly important now, when we see examples of rampant bullying and intimidation.

At the end of the day, Chairman Cummings’ legacy is that of true patriotism, exceptional public service and steadfast faith and commitment to the greater good — not just in Baltimore but throughout the country. That’s the mark of true leadership and his famous remarks at his last congressional hearing will continue to echo during this difficult period in the nation’s history: “When we’re dancing with the angels, the question will be asked: In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact?”
